The Mentoring Program

Students:

Each of you is important to us as an individual. As a student in middle school, one of the most beneficial plans we have is to help form a special relationship between the students and the teachers. Each student is part of a small group that meets with an advising teacher. The advisory group meets twenty minutes every day before students go to their first academic class.

Each student will be in the same advisory group for all three years. This will foster a relationship with the teacher and fellow students and give the student some constancy in the fast-paced middle school years. Each advisement group will consist of students from all three grades. The rotation of the group members provides for new relationships within the group while still retaining stability.

The Teacher Advisory (TA) classroom time is a very unique time of the day. There is rarely a school-wide format, meaning, each teacher encourages a unique format. The following is a list of activities that have gone on in past years, during the TA time:

Scrabble

School newspaper

Test preparation

World email pen-pals

Sharing time

Art / music

Interview the teacher

Relaxation methods

Homework help

Study skills

Current events

Career days

Field trips

Role playing

Guest speakers

Organization times

Sharing a meal

Computer skills

Oral reading

Values discussion

Harbor teachers are committed to providing quality TA groups. Students are encouraged to bring new ideas, participate, and learn from this special time.

Parents:

It has been proven that one of the most important factors in a student’s school years, especially in Middle school, is a one on one relationship with a caring teacher. Here at Harbor Middle, we match up a Teacher or an Administrator with each student. Not only does this bridge the student body with the caring Adults at our school, it provides further security for each student in these changing times!
